  • Built during the Qajar era, Sa'd al-Saltaneh Caravanserai is the largest indoor caravanserai in the world and one of Iran’s best-preserved urban caravanserais. This architectural masterpiece showcases the grandeur of Persian craftsmanship and served as a hub for travelers, merchants, and cultural exchange.

Why It’s Special:

  • A Qajar-Era Masterpiece:

    • Commissioned by Sa'd al-Saltaneh, the caravanserai spans 6.2 hectares and is built on a square plan with four grand iwans (vaulted spaces) surrounding a central courtyard.

    • Features intricate Muqarnas vaulting, geometric patterns, and domed ceilings that highlight the artistic and architectural excellence of the Qajar period.

  • Historic Significance:

    • Once a bustling hub for merchants and travelers, the caravanserai offered rest, trade, and community.

    • Includes elevated traveler rooms (Hujrehs) and a central Hashti dome, symbolizing the interconnectedness of historical trade routes.

  • Unique Features:

    • Dalan-i Qeisariyeh (Caesar’s Hall): Connects the caravanserai to the Bazaar of Vizir, emphasizing its role as a trade and commerce center.

    • Dalan-i Ghahremani (Ghahremani Hall): Enhances the symmetry and accessibility of the structure.

    • Intimate Courtyards: In addition to the central courtyard, two smaller courtyards provide peaceful retreats.
