Built during the Qajar era, Sa'd al-Saltaneh Caravanserai is the largest indoor caravanserai in the world and one of Iran’s best-preserved urban caravanserais. A Qajar-Era Masterpiece:
Commissioned by Sa'd al-Saltaneh, the caravanserai spans 6.2 hectares and is built on a square plan with four grand iwans (vaulted spaces) surrounding a central courtyard.
Features intricate Muqarnas vaulting, geometric patterns, and domed ceilings that highlight the artistic and architectural excellence of the Qajar period.
Historic Significance:
Once a bustling hub for merchants and travelers, the caravanserai offered rest, trade, and community.
Includes elevated traveler rooms (Hujrehs) and a central Hashti dome, symbolizing the interconnectedness of historical trade routes.
